No End for YouTube Aug. 27, 2008
Source: The H. reporter
by: Daniel Barna

Boys and girls the decline of the movie theater is readily upon us. Ok, maybe that's a little bit drastic but the seeds are being planted, no doubt. Charles Ferguson's Oscar-nominated documentary NO END IN SIGHT, which casts a critical eye on the decisions made during the early months of the war in Iraq, will officially be the first widely released feature film to be broadcast in full on the site. The Winner of a special jury prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival will screen between September 1st and November 4th on the site. Is the term "straight to DVD" destined to become "straight to YouTube"? Seems drastic I know, but only time will tell.

Extra Tidbit: The oft-praised film lost the best documentary Oscar to Alex Gibney's TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE.

NOT DIRECT
I saw this in a theater last year, it is most definitely not going "straight-to-youtube." It's also been on DVD since October '07.

A minimal bit of research could have made you aware of both of the theatrical run (where it made $1.5 million) and the previous DVD release.

Since it's been widely available for nearly a year, I don't think putting it on youtube for a couple of weeks is going to hurt it financially. What it WILL do possibly get people to see a great documentary, and an invaluable record of how we got into, and then blundered our way through a war.

I imagine the timing (an entire month before Election Day), is the key factor for making it avaiable on Youtube.

documentaries and small films fine...but i dont have any worries of theaters going anywhere anytime even remotely soon. when films can still have solid runs and then occasionally there is something like the dark knight...public has made it clear it will still go to movies.

I hope only Documentary and other lesser viewed films are put up on youtube to bring in a larger audience for the message. It's a great idea. As long as its not taken out of hand. And remains free...

Some youtube videos are available in HD, I mean, not the HD per say, it´s just a really good quality. Just search in youtube words like TRUE-HD and see some videos for yourself...sometimes loading times is a bitch.

IT MAY HAVE LOST TO TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE...
...but they both should've lost to King of Kong. Yes, the other two films had more serious subject matter, but Kong was a superior example of film making, simple as that. It also appeared on waaaaaay more best of the year list than any other documentary in 2007.

HMM
But if it goes straight to Youtube, doesn't that mean they're losing money? How can they make more profit off of Youtube than DVD sales?
