WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

Bond breaks records!!!

The James Bond franchise's first direct sequel, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, managed to break all records for the longstanding series, with a $70M opening, which bested Daniel Craig's first ride in the saddle, CASINO ROYALE, which opened with $40M just two years ago, as well as the franchise's best opening, which was $47M for 2002's DIE ANOTHER DAY starring Pierce Brosnan as the British Spy who likes to say his last name first, followed by his complete name afterwards. Blow. JoBlo.

Only time will tell if the film will be able to surpass the franchise's greatest box-office success, which was CASINO ROYALE, with a touch over $167M back in 2006. Only 5 Bond films have actually grossed over $100M domestically in their lifetime. Being as QUANTUM opened two weeks earlier around the world than in North America, the film has already grossed $251M internationally, which combined with the $70M in the States, gives it a worldwide haul of $322M, which is already past the halfway mark of the $594M which CASINO totaled around the world back in 2006 (the Bond record).

Since no other film opened this past weekend, no other major changes occurred in the top 10, as most films just dropped a spot or two. MADAGASCAR 2 slipped from 1st place to 2nd this weekend, although it only lost about 40% of its massive audience from last weekend.

The film with the biggest drop from last weekend was SOUL MEN, which lost 55% of its audience, while the film that lost the least of its audience in the top 10 was THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, which lost only 22% of its audience from last week, and is now totaling $33M overall. ROLE MODELS is also doing surprisingly well, closing in on the $40M mark after only 10 days of release.

Next week sees the release of one of the biggest phenomena of the year called TWILIGHT, a teen-vampire flick based on the major best-selling series created by Stephenie Meyer, as well as BOLT, Walt Disney's attempt at 3D animation on the big screen, with voices by John Travolta and Miley Cyrus. So the big question now goes to you all: how much $$$ do you think TWILIGHT will open with next weekend? VOTE HERE!!!

1. Quantum of Solace $ 70.4 Million
NEW
2. Madagascar 2 $ 36.1 Million $ 118 Million
3. Role Models $ 11.7 Million $ 38.1 Million
4. High School Musical 3 $ 5.9 Million $ 84.4 Million
5. Changeling $ 4.2 Million $ 27.6 Million
6. Zack And Miri Make... $ 3.2 Million $ 26.5 Million
7. Soul Men $ 2.4 Million $ 9.4 Million
8. The Secret Life of... $ 2.4 Million $ 33.7 Million
9. Saw 5 $ 1.8 Million $ 55.4 Million
10. The Haunting of... $ 1.6 Million $ 12.7 Million

I liked QoS, even though I didn't quite love it like I hoped I would. I'm happy that it's doing so well because I really like Daniel Craig as Bond and I really want him to succeed in the role (and to shut the haters up for good).

NOT BAD
being that im a huge fan of james bond and ive seen every single one of them i do have high expectations of all of them. i believe that QOS was way better than Casino Royale. i found CR to be very slow paced towards the end only the first half had great action. QOS was action packed throughout the film but all it really was was a typical movie about revenge which is fine but its unusual for James Bond. i did believe it was great but it was a different bond than i am used to. i loved how the other bond films had cool gadgets and nice cars containing them. but who knows maybe this is how they are jumpstarting craig as a bond and they will change things up in the next one. i have a feeling he will go down as one of the better bonds he impressed me alot wit this film way more than he did with CR

Quantum was a bit of a dissapointment but I do believe it was necessary. This was a revenge film and bond was strictly business. At the end though you see that bond is on his way back and I think the next movie will see him become Bond James Bond. This a trilogy and that final of the three will have him comeback around. He will be a new bond and a bit messy but much more exciting to watch.

By the way, I know it's early for this yet but I'm putting my suggestion for director of the next Bond. The man who's always wanted to direct one.

Steven Spielberg.

QOS
SUCKED. terrible film, boring, empty, heartless. saw role models saturday. different type of film, of course, but far superior.

QOS took everything that makes bond bond and shat on it. the action sucked and put me to sleep. there was no joy. there was no FUN. it was dull.

I really enjoyed QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Sure, it wasn't CASINO ROYALE, but it was still really enjoyable. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the nod to GOLDFINGER which was terrific!!

Just got back from Bond and I was very disappointed. The whole film seemed disjointed. How are we supposed to enjoy this movie when more than half of the plot is setting up the next installment? Leave it to Paul Haggis to write another shitty movie.
